Mozambique

Mozambique is a long Indian Ocean country with Portuguese-influenced cities, Swahili and Makua coastal history, coral islands, dhow culture, seafood, wildlife parks, and some of southern Africa's strongest beach-and-marine landscapes. Visitor interest usually centers on Maputo, Tofo, Vilankulo, Bazaruto Archipelago National Park, Inhambane, Gorongosa National Park, Ilha de Mocambique, Ponta do Ouro, and, when security allows, the Quirimbas. UNESCO lists Ilha de Mocambique, the former Portuguese East Africa capital, for its fortified stone town, macuti town, and Indian Ocean trading history.

A first visit usually needs 7 to 12 days because distances are long and flights or road transfers shape the route. Maputo works for two days of architecture, markets, music, seafood, and museums; Vilankulo and Bazaruto need several days for boat trips, snorkeling, diving, dunes, and dugong habitat; Tofo is popular for whale sharks, manta rays, surf, and backpacker-style beach time; Gorongosa requires dedicated safari logistics. The dry season is usually easier for roads, beaches, diving, and wildlife, while cyclone season can disrupt coastal plans. Rural roads can be slow, and night driving is not recommended.

The U.S. State Department lists Mozambique at Level 2, exercise increased caution, citing health issues, crime, civil unrest, and terrorism, with Level 4 Do Not Travel areas including Cabo Delgado Province, the Niassa Special Reserve, and certain northern districts in Nampula. It says U.S. tourist and business travelers may not currently need a visa if staying in registered accommodation, but proof of round-trip travel and hotel reservation is required; passports need six months validity and two blank pages. Mozambique suits beach travelers, divers, safari-goers, food lovers, photographers, and experienced regional travelers who plan around current security guidance.

Visitor Tip: Keep beach itineraries south or central unless current advisories support otherwise, avoid night road travel, and confirm transfer boats, flights, and park access before paying nonrefundable bookings.
