Nepal

Nepal is a Himalayan country where travel often combines Kathmandu Valley heritage, trekking, Buddhist and Hindu pilgrimage sites, wildlife parks, mountain views, rafting, and village stays. The Nepal Tourism Board highlights Kathmandu, Pokhara, Everest, Janakpur, Chitwan, Lumbini, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, protected areas, eight-thousanders, pilgrimage sites, trekking, rafting, paragliding, mountain biking, birding, heritage walks, food, homestays, visas, TIMS cards, trekking permits, park fees, and mountain safety. First-time visitors usually build around Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur, Pokhara, Chitwan, Lumbini, or a trek in the Annapurna, Everest, Langtang, or Manaslu regions.

UNESCO lists four World Heritage properties in Nepal: Kathmandu Valley, Lumbini, Chitwan National Park, and Sagarmatha National Park. Kathmandu Valley includes durbar squares, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, Pashupatinath, and Changu Narayan, while Lumbini is associated with the birth of the Buddha. Chitwan is a lowland wildlife destination with rhinos, birds, river trips, and community-run lodges, and Sagarmatha covers the Everest region. Trekking is the defining experience for many visitors, but routes differ widely in altitude, road access, permit requirements, teahouse standards, and guide rules.

A non-trekking Nepal trip can work in 7 to 10 days; classic treks often need 10 to 18 days including acclimatization and contingency time. The State Department lists Nepal at Level 2 due to civil unrest and notes limited emergency medical capacity, especially outside Kathmandu; it also warns of earthquakes, floods, and landslides. Travelers should carry medical evacuation insurance, avoid demonstrations, build acclimatization days into high-altitude routes, and confirm current TIMS, guide, and restricted-area permit rules. October-November and March-April are the main trekking and mountain-view seasons; monsoon months bring leeches, landslides, and flight disruption.

Visitor Tip: Do not shorten acclimatization to save a day; choose the trek length around altitude safety, permit rules, and weather buffers, not only around flight dates.
