Nauru

Nauru is one of the world's smallest countries, a remote central Pacific island with limited tourism infrastructure, phosphate-mining history, coastal drives, WWII remnants, Anibare Bay, Buada Lagoon, limestone pinnacles, fishing, reef views, and a very compact scale. The official Nauru Tourism Corporation site returned an internal error in automated browsing, so current visitor planning could not be fully verified from a national tourism site. The Government of Nauru site confirms official government resources, while independent sources describe a small accommodation base, Nauru International Airport, Nauru Airlines links, basic restaurants, car hire, and deep-sea fishing or diving possibilities.

Nauru is historically and environmentally unusual because phosphate mining reshaped much of the island's interior, leaving a stark contrast between the coastal road, villages, beaches, and the mined central plateau. A visit is more about geographic curiosity, Pacific history, local life, and unusual landscapes than conventional resort tourism. Main stops include Anibare Bay for scenery, Buada Lagoon for the island's inland freshwater setting, Command Ridge for WWII remains and viewpoints, the Parliament area, coastal villages, and the loop road around the island. Expect simple facilities, limited interpretive signage, and few organized attractions.

Most travelers who visit can see the island in one or two days, though flight schedules may require a longer stay. The State Department lists Nauru at Level 1 and says a tourist visa is required, with passport validity of three months and one blank page per stamp. Nauru is hot and humid, with limited medical facilities and limited tourism inventory, so visitors should confirm accommodation, airport transfers, car hire, cash/card access, and onward flights before arrival. It suits country collectors, Pacific specialists, WWII-history travelers, fisheries or development researchers, and visitors comfortable with very limited tourist services.

Visitor Tip: Confirm the visa, hotel, transfer, and onward flight in writing before departure; Nauru is small, but missed logistics are harder to fix there than on larger Pacific islands.
