Oman

Oman combines Muscat waterfront culture, restored forts, desert camps, mountain villages, wadis, and the frankincense coast around Salalah. A practical first itinerary usually starts in Muscat with the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Muttrah Corniche and souq, Old Muscat museums, and the Royal Opera House, then continues by car toward Nizwa Fort and souq, Jebel Akhdar or Jebel Shams, Wahiba/Sharqiya Sands, Wadi Bani Khalid, Sur, and Ras Al Jinz turtle reserve. Roads between major sights are generally good, but mountain and desert side trips may require a 4WD, local guide, or careful route planning.

UNESCO lists five cultural World Heritage properties in Oman: Bahla Fort, the Archaeological Sites of Bat, Al-Khutm and Al-Ayn, the Aflaj Irrigation Systems, the Land of Frankincense, and the Ancient City of Qalhat. Bahla Fort is one of the country's most important mud-brick fortifications and was formerly on UNESCO's danger list before conservation work; the aflaj sites document water-management systems that still shape oasis settlements. Travelers interested in architecture, archaeology, and trade history can pair Nizwa and Bahla with Jabreen Castle, while nature-focused visitors usually prioritize wadis, turtle beaches, the Hajar Mountains, and Salalah during the khareef monsoon.

The best general season is roughly October through April, when daytime heat is easier for walking through forts, souqs, and wadis; Salalah is unusual because July and August bring the cooler, misty khareef season. The U.S. State Department currently lists Oman as Level 3, Reconsider Travel, citing terrorism and armed-conflict risk, and specifically says not to travel to the Yemen border area. Tourist visas are required, can be arranged through the Royal Oman Police e-visa system, and may also be available at airports and land crossings; travelers should verify current rules, carry modest clothing for mosques and villages, and avoid public arguments or rude gestures because local laws on public behavior are strict.

Visitor Tip: Use Muscat or Nizwa as bases for early starts, especially in warm months; arrive at forts and wadis in the morning, carry water and sun protection, and verify both security advisories and site hours before driving long distances.
