Pakistan

Pakistan is a large, geographically varied country with Indus Valley archaeology, Mughal architecture, Sufi shrines, mountain valleys, high-altitude trekking, desert landscapes, and major cities such as Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, and Multan. The Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation describes the country from the Karakoram and Himalaya in the north to the Indus delta in the south, with trekking, mountaineering, white-water rafting, mountain and desert jeep safaris, camel and yak safaris, trout fishing, and birding among its promoted activities. Gilgit-Baltistan is the main base for high-mountain travel, while Lahore and Sindh are stronger for architecture and archaeological itineraries.

UNESCO lists six cultural World Heritage properties in Pakistan: Mohenjo-daro, Taxila, the Buddhist Ruins of Takht-i-Bahi and Sahr-i-Bahlol, the Historical Monuments at Makli, the Fort and Shalamar Gardens in Lahore, and Rohtas Fort. A first-time cultural route can combine Lahore Fort, Badshahi Mosque, Shalamar Gardens, and the Walled City with Islamabad and Taxila; more ambitious trips add Mohenjo-daro near Larkana, Makli near Thatta, or the Karakoram Highway toward Hunza and Skardu. These places reward history buffs, photographers, archaeologically minded travelers, and experienced trekkers, but distances, permits, road conditions, and security approvals can shape the itinerary more than sightseeing ambition.

Travel planning requires current security research. The U.S. State Department currently lists Pakistan as Level 3, Reconsider Travel, due to armed conflict, terrorism, crime, and kidnapping, and says not to travel to Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including former FATA, or the immediate vicinity of the Line of Control. It also notes limited U.S. government ability to assist citizens in KP, Balochistan, Pakistan-administered Azad Kashmir, and most areas outside Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi; government personnel face movement restrictions, and some hotels, markets, religious sites, taxis, and public transportation may be off-limits to them. Travelers should verify visas, permits, local escorts, photography restrictions near sensitive buildings, and mountain-rescue insurance before committing funds.

Visitor Tip: Keep a Pakistan trip focused on verified, currently accessible regions and build it through reputable local operators; for trekking or northern-road travel, confirm permits, weather windows, rescue costs, and security guidance before departure rather than after arrival.
