Palau

Palau is a western Pacific island nation of more than 300 islands, known especially for diving, snorkeling, limestone Rock Islands, WWII history, marine conservation, and Palauan culture. The official tourism site, Pristine Paradise Palau, highlights diving, nature, fishing, culture, food, the country's 16 states, and practical travel by air through Guam, Manila, Taiwan, Japan, Nauru, and other regional routes. Koror is the main visitor base for hotels, dive shops, restaurants, and boat tours, while Babeldaob adds waterfalls, bai meeting houses, stone monoliths, and quieter road trips.

UNESCO lists Rock Islands Southern Lagoon as Palau's World Heritage property, a mixed cultural and natural landscape of hundreds of mostly uninhabited limestone islands, marine lakes, coral reefs, and archaeological remains. First-time visitors usually prioritize Rock Islands boat tours, snorkeling or diving at sites such as Blue Corner and German Channel, kayaking among limestone islands, Jellyfish Lake when open under current conservation rules, and a land trip to Peleliu for WWII battlefield history. Divers should plan around operator quality, currents, certification level, and marine-permit rules; non-divers can still enjoy kayaking, snorkeling, cultural sites, and scenic flights or boat tours.

Palau works well as a 5 to 7 day trip, with more time for serious diving or outer-island travel. The U.S. State Department currently lists Palau as Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, but advises increased caution in the Rock Islands and smaller outlying islands because emergency medical infrastructure is limited and evacuation may require a multi-hour boat ride; it also warns of unexploded WWII ordnance on Peleliu and recommends known guides. U.S. visitors do not need a visa for stays of one year or less, but need a passport valid six months beyond arrival, one blank page, a Palau Entry Form submitted within 72 hours of arrival, and a $100 environmental fee that airlines are required to include in tickets.

Visitor Tip: Book dive and Rock Islands operators before arrival, confirm current permits and Jellyfish Lake status, and use guides on Peleliu because WWII ordnance remains a real safety concern.
