Portugal
Portugal is a compact Atlantic country with historic cities, beaches, wine regions, pilgrimage sites, castles, surf towns, and two island archipelagos, Madeira and the Azores. Visit Portugal groups the country around Lisbon, Porto and the North, Central Portugal, Alentejo, Algarve, Madeira, and the Azores, which makes route planning fairly intuitive. First-time visitors usually pair Lisbon, Belem, Sintra, Cascais, Porto, and the Douro Valley, then add the Algarve coast, Coimbra, Evora, Nazare, Obidos, Braga, Guimaraes, Madeira levada walks, or Azores volcanic landscapes depending on season and interests.
UNESCO gives Portugal unusual depth for a small country, with properties including the monasteries of Alcobaca, Batalha, and the Jeronimos Monastery and Tower of Belem in Lisbon; the historic centers of Porto, Evora, Guimaraes, and Angra do Heroismo; the Cultural Landscape of Sintra; the Alto Douro Wine Region; the University of Coimbra; the Laurisilva of Madeira; the prehistoric rock art of the Coa Valley; and the garrison border town of Elvas. Architecture and history travelers can build a strong rail route between Lisbon, Coimbra, Porto, and Guimaraes, while photographers often prioritize sunrise or late afternoon in Sintra, Porto's riverfront, the Douro terraces, and coastal viewpoints.
Seven to ten days works well for Lisbon, Sintra, Porto, and one countryside or coast extension; two weeks allows the Douro, Algarve, or islands without rushing. Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons for cities and walking, summer is best for beaches but crowded and hot inland, and winter is mild in Lisbon and Madeira but wetter in the north. The U.S. State Department lists Portugal as Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, with petty theft as the most common tourist issue in crowded areas and on public transport. U.S. tourists can stay up to 90 days in the Schengen area without a visa; visitors should verify passport validity, lodging taxes, museum hours, and timed-entry rules before travel.
Visitor Tip: Use trains for Lisbon-Porto-Coimbra routes and avoid driving into old centers; reserve Sintra palace entries and Douro tastings ahead, especially from May through September.
