Paraguay

Paraguay is a landlocked South American country centered on Asuncion, river travel, Jesuit mission history, Guarani culture, cattle country, and the vast Gran Chaco. The official Visit Paraguay site promotes Asuncion, Encarnacion, Ciudad del Este, the Jesuit Route, Chaco expeditions, nature reserves, birding, river beaches, handicrafts, and cultural festivals. It is best for travelers who enjoy lower-key cities, regional history, road trips, and places with fewer international tourists rather than a checklist of globally famous monuments.

UNESCO lists one Paraguayan World Heritage property: the Jesuit Missions of La Santisima Trinidad de Parana and Jesus de Tavarangue, near Encarnacion. These 17th- and 18th-century mission ruins are the country's clearest must-see for history travelers, with stone church remains, carved architectural details, and a setting that pairs well with Encarnacion's Costanera riverfront and nearby San Cosme y Damian. In Asuncion, first-time visitors usually focus on the historic center, Palacio de Lopez exterior, Casa de la Independencia, Museo del Barro, riverfront walks, markets, and restaurants serving sopa paraguaya, chipa, mbeju, and terere.

Paraguay works as a 3 to 5 day stop for Asuncion and the missions, or a longer specialist trip for the Chaco, birding, or overland travel. The U.S. State Department lists Paraguay as Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, but says to exercise increased caution in Alto Parana, Amambay, Canindeyu, Concepcion, and San Pedro because criminal groups are active along parts of the Brazil border and police presence can be weak. U.S. tourists do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days; passports must be valid at entry, one stamp page is requested, and yellow fever proof is required only when arriving from a risk country. Road planning matters: rural roads may be unpaved or impassable in the November-April rainy season, and night travel outside Asuncion is not advisable.

Visitor Tip: Base a short trip around Asuncion and Encarnacion, then add the Jesuit missions with daylight transport; for the Chaco or border departments, use current local advice and a vehicle suited to rough roads.
