R?union

Reunion is a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean, best known for volcanic scenery, mountain cirques, Creole culture, hiking, canyoning, beaches, and dramatic coastal roads. The official Reunion tourism site presents the island around beaches, lagoons, hiking, volcano visits, waterfalls, markets, Creole food, whale watching, paragliding, canyoning, and the towns of Saint-Denis, Saint-Gilles, Saint-Pierre, Cilaos, Salazie, and Hell-Bourg. It is most rewarding for active travelers who want steep landscapes and local culture more than a resort-only beach trip.

UNESCO lists Pitons, cirques and remparts of Reunion Island as a natural World Heritage property covering the rugged core of Reunion National Park. The island's signature natural sights include Piton de la Fournaise, one of the world's most active shield volcanoes; the cirques of Mafate, Cilaos, and Salazie; lava fields along the Route des Laves; waterfalls such as Voile de la Mariee; and high viewpoints reached by mountain roads or trails. Mafate has no road access and is reached on foot or by helicopter, so hiking fitness, weather, and lodging reservations matter. Piton de la Fournaise is usually approached by road to Pas de Bellecombe, but access to the caldera can close during eruptions or seismic alerts.

A practical first visit needs 5 to 7 days for beaches, the volcano, and one or two cirques, or 10 days for serious hiking. The cooler, drier austral winter from roughly May to November is better for trekking and views; the warmer wet season can bring cyclones, heavy rain, landslides, and trail closures. U.S. citizens follow French entry rules for this overseas department, and should verify current passport, visa, and health guidance before travel. A rental car is highly useful, but mountain roads are winding, fog can form quickly, and some trailheads fill early; hikers need rain gear, sun protection, water, and current park or prefecture notices.

Visitor Tip: Start volcano and cirque days before dawn, when clouds are less likely and parking is easier, and check official trail, weather, and eruption alerts before committing to long hikes.
