Romania

Romania combines Bucharest, Transylvanian towns, Carpathian mountains, painted monasteries, fortified churches, Black Sea resorts, the Danube Delta, and rural traditions that remain visible in Maramures and Bucovina. A first itinerary often links Bucharest with Brasov, Bran, Sinaia, Sibiu, Sighisoara, and Cluj-Napoca, while longer trips add Maramures wooden churches, Bucovina monasteries, Timisoara, Oradea, the Transfagarasan or Transalpina roads, and Danube Delta boat routes from Tulcea. It suits history travelers, photographers, hikers, families with older children, birders, and road-trippers comfortable with variable driving conditions.

UNESCO lists Romanian heritage including the Danube Delta, Churches of Moldavia, Monastery of Horezu, Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania, Dacian Fortresses of the Orastie Mountains, Historic Centre of Sighisoara, Wooden Churches of Maramures, Rosia Montana Mining Cultural Landscape, and the transnational Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests. Sighisoara is an inhabited medieval citadel with a clock tower and guild towers; the Danube Delta is one of Europe's major wetlands for pelicans, herons, and boat-based wildlife viewing; and the painted monasteries of Bucovina are known for exterior frescoes. Bran Castle is famous for Dracula associations, but Peles Castle, Corvin Castle, and fortified churches often provide stronger architectural substance.

Seven to ten days works for Bucharest and southern Transylvania; two weeks lets visitors add Bucovina, Maramures, or the Danube Delta. Spring and autumn are good for cities and castles, summer works for mountains and the Delta but can be hot, and winter brings snow to ski areas and mountain roads. The U.S. State Department lists Romania as Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, while noting moderate seismic activity and strong-earthquake history, especially in Bucharest. U.S. tourists do not need a visa for stays of 90 days or less; passports need three months validity beyond departure and one blank page. Accessibility is uneven in old towns, castles, rural guesthouses, and train stations.

Visitor Tip: Do not try to see every famous castle in one day; base in Brasov or Sibiu, book timed castle entries where offered, and check mountain-road openings before planning Transfagarasan or Transalpina drives.
