Rwanda

Rwanda is a compact East African country known for mountain gorilla trekking, Kigali, clean and orderly public spaces, hilly scenery, Lake Kivu, Akagera savanna wildlife, Nyungwe rainforest, and genocide memorials. Visit Rwanda highlights biodiversity across volcanoes, montane rainforest, and plains; gorilla tracking remains the signature experience, but strong itineraries also include Kigali Genocide Memorial, Nyungwe canopy walkway and chimpanzee tracking, Akagera National Park safaris, Lake Kivu towns such as Gisenyi/Rubavu and Kibuye/Karongi, and cultural sites such as the King's Palace Museum in Nyanza.

Rwanda has two UNESCO World Heritage properties, both inscribed in 2023: Nyungwe National Park and the Memorial sites of the Genocide: Nyamata, Murambi, Gisozi and Bisesero. Nyungwe protects montane rainforest, peat bogs, moorlands, grasslands, chimpanzees, golden monkeys, orchids, butterflies, and important bird habitats. The memorial sites are essential but emotionally demanding places of remembrance for the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi; visitors should allow quiet time, dress respectfully, avoid intrusive photography, and follow local guidance at mass graves, churches, exhibits, and survivor-focused spaces.

A first visit usually needs 6 to 9 days: 1 to 2 days in Kigali, 2 to 3 days around Volcanoes National Park, and either Akagera, Nyungwe, or Lake Kivu as an extension. Gorilla permits should be booked well ahead, and treks can involve mud, steep slopes, nettles, and one to several hours of hiking; good boots, gaiters, rain gear, gloves, and a porter make the experience easier. The U.S. State Department currently lists Rwanda as Level 3, Reconsider Travel, due to crime, unrest, and health risks, and says not to travel within 10 km of the Democratic Republic of the Congo border; it notes Volcanoes National Park is not included in that increased-risk area. U.S. visitors need a visa and can get a 30-day tourist visa on arrival, with six months passport validity and one blank page.

Visitor Tip: Book gorilla permits before lodging, hire a porter even if you are fit, and keep DRC-border and health advisories under review because conditions can change quickly.
