Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia has opened rapidly to tourism, offering desert archaeology, Red Sea coast, Islamic history, old towns, modern Riyadh, Jeddah's historic district, AlUla, Diriyah, mountain villages, date oases, and major events. Visit Saudi presents Riyadh, Jeddah, AlUla, the Red Sea, Taif, Abha and Asir, the Eastern Province, Najran, Hail, and pilgrimage-related travel as distinct trip styles. Non-Muslim visitors cannot enter Mecca, and access rules around Medina, holy sites, and pilgrimage seasons should be verified before booking.

UNESCO lists eight Saudi World Heritage properties: Hegra Archaeological Site at AlUla, At-Turaif District in ad-Diriyah, Historic Jeddah, Rock Art in the Hail Region, Al-Ahsa Oasis, Hima Cultural Area, Uruq Bani Ma'arid, and the Cultural Landscape of Al-Faw Archaeological Area. Hegra is the country's first UNESCO site and preserves Nabataean tombs cut into sandstone outcrops; Historic Jeddah shows Red Sea merchant architecture and coral-stone houses; Diriyah connects directly to the first Saudi state; and Al-Ahsa combines oasis settlement, springs, canals, and palm groves. First-time visitors often split a trip between Riyadh, AlUla, and Jeddah rather than trying to cover the whole country.

The best general season is roughly November through March, when desert walks, old-town visits, and outdoor festivals are more comfortable; summer heat can make daytime sightseeing difficult. The U.S. State Department currently lists Saudi Arabia as Level 3, Reconsider Travel, due to Iranian drone and missile targeting of American interests, armed conflict, terrorism, exit bans, and local laws regarding social media activity, and says not to travel to the Yemen border. A visa is required; U.S. travelers may apply for an e-visa or visa on arrival, passports need six months validity beyond arrival and two blank pages, and some prescription medications require prior approval. Alcohol, drugs including cannabis/CBD, pornography, public displays of affection, and critical online activity can create serious legal problems.

Visitor Tip: Build an itinerary around one region at a time, verify security advisories before payment, and review medication, social-media, dress, and public-decency rules before entering the country.
