Svalbard and Jan Mayen
Svalbard and Jan Mayen is an ISO grouping of two Norwegian Arctic territories, but visitor travel is overwhelmingly about Svalbard, especially Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen; Jan Mayen is a remote volcanic island with no ordinary tourism infrastructure. Visit Svalbard presents Longyearbyen as a High Arctic base for boat trips, hiking, kayaking, dog sledding, snowmobiling, ice caves, Northern Lights tours, photo safaris, mine visits, museums, restaurants, and expeditions. The destination suits adventurous travelers who want Arctic scenery with organized services, not independent wilderness wandering.
Longyearbyen has the Svalbard Museum, North Pole Expedition Museum, Svalbard Church, nearby mine visits, restaurants, shops, and access to Isfjord boat routes, while longer excursions may visit Barentsburg, Pyramiden, glaciers, bird cliffs, or winter snowmobile routes. Svalbard has three main visitor seasons according to Visit Svalbard: Polar Summer from May 17 to September 30, Northern Lights Winter from October 1 to February 28, and Sunny Winter from March 1 to May 16. Events listed by Visit Svalbard include Polarjazz, Arctic Chamber Music Festival, Sun Festival Week, Svalbard Ski Marathon, Spitsbergen Marathon, Taste Svalbard, and Dark Season Blues.
Safety rules are central. Visit Svalbard says polar bears can be encountered anywhere in Svalbard all year, and travelers leaving settlements should go organized with a local guide. The Governor of Svalbard handles law enforcement, environmental protection, permits, and rescue coordination; protected areas, cultural remains, drones, firearms, snowmobile routes, and wildlife approaches are regulated. Svalbard itself is outside Schengen immigration rules and is visa-free, but most travelers transit mainland Norway and need permission to enter Schengen if their nationality requires it; all travelers need passport or approved ID for identity checks. Medical care is limited, weather changes fast, and winter tours require real cold-weather clothing.
Visitor Tip: Do not leave Longyearbyen without a qualified guide unless you fully understand polar-bear, weather, communication, and legal requirements; most visitors get a better and safer trip by booking small-group outdoor excursions through licensed local operators.
