Solomon Islands

The Solomon Islands are a Pacific archipelago of roughly 1,000 islands, known for WWII history, diving, coral reefs, village culture, birding, surfing, fishing, and low-key island lodges. Tourism Solomons highlights Honiara, Guadalcanal, Gizo, Munda, Marovo Lagoon, Tulagi, Rennell, Western Province, culture, trekking, scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing, fishing, WWII history, and practical inter-island planning. The country is best for experienced independent travelers, divers, military-history enthusiasts, and visitors comfortable with small planes, boats, limited services, and a slower travel rhythm.

UNESCO lists East Rennell as the Solomon Islands' World Heritage property. It is the southern third of Rennell Island, the world's largest raised coral atoll, and includes Lake Tegano, a brackish former lagoon with limestone islands, endemic species, dense forest, customary land ownership, and a three-nautical-mile marine area. The site has been on the World Heritage in Danger list since 2013 because of logging threats, and a 2019 oil spill near Rennell caused major environmental and community harm. East Rennell is difficult to reach, so many first trips instead focus on Honiara WWII sites, the U.S. and Japanese memorials, Bonegi wreck dives, Munda reefs, Gizo lagoons, and Marovo Lagoon.

Seven to ten days works for Honiara plus one island region; two weeks is better for divers or travelers combining Western Province and Guadalcanal. Tourism Solomons says May to October has the lowest rainfall, humidity, and temperatures, though coastal sea breezes moderate weather year-round. International access is usually through Honiara, and domestic travel depends on small aircraft, boats, and local operators; schedules can change, so buffers matter. U.S. tourists generally do not need a visa for short stays, but should verify current entry rules, health requirements, and cyclone-season conditions. Conservative dress and permission before photographing people, graves, or villages are important in local communities.

Visitor Tip: Keep the itinerary simple: spend a night in Honiara for WWII context and logistics, then choose one island base such as Gizo or Munda rather than relying on tight same-day domestic transfers.
