Swaziland

Eswatini is a small landlocked kingdom between South Africa and Mozambique, known for compact wildlife reserves, mountain scenery, craft markets, cultural festivals, traditional ceremonies, and easy overland access from northeastern South Africa. The official tourism site, The Kingdom of Eswatini, highlights Hlane Royal National Park, Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, Mkhaya Game Reserve, Malolotja Nature Reserve, Mantenga Cultural Village, Ezulwini Valley, Ngwenya Glass, Sibebe Rock, craft centers, hiking, mountain biking, birding, rafting, and cultural events. Its small scale makes it useful as a two- to five-day addition to a South Africa or Mozambique trip.

Eswatini has no inscribed UNESCO World Heritage property, but UNESCO lists tentative sites including Ngwenya Mine, which is often cited as one of the world's oldest known mines, and the Lubombo Biosphere Reserve area. Wildlife experiences are more intimate than in larger safari countries: Hlane offers rhino, elephant, lion-viewing areas, and birding; Mkhaya specializes in guided wildlife drives and rhino conservation; Mlilwane is suitable for walking, cycling, and horseback safaris without big predators; and Malolotja has highland hiking, waterfalls, and grassland views. Cultural travelers should verify dates for Umhlanga Reed Dance and Incwala, major national ceremonies where etiquette and photography rules matter.

The best general travel months are the dry winter period from May to September for cooler wildlife viewing and clearer hiking, while summer brings greener landscapes, heat, storms, and some rougher roads. U.S. travelers generally do not need a tourist visa for stays under 30 days, but passports should have at least six months validity and two blank pages; border officials may ask for onward travel and proof of accommodation. The U.S. State Department has recently advised normal precautions overall, while noting crime and road-safety risks; visitors should avoid night driving, use caution around demonstrations, and expect livestock, pedestrians, and potholes on roads.

Visitor Tip: Base in Ezulwini or Malkerns for easy access to culture, crafts, Mlilwane, and Mantenga, then add Hlane or Mkhaya as a separate wildlife overnight rather than a rushed day trip.
