Syria

Syria has extraordinary historic and archaeological significance, including Damascus, Aleppo, Palmyra, Bosra, Krak des Chevaliers, Qal'at Salah El-Din, and the ancient villages of northern Syria, but it is not a normal leisure destination under current conditions. Before the war, travelers visited Old Damascus, the Umayyad Mosque, Aleppo's souqs and citadel, Palmyra's Roman-era ruins, Bosra's theater, Crusader castles, coastal mountains, and museum collections in Damascus and Aleppo. Today, this information is best treated as cultural background rather than a recommendation to visit.

UNESCO lists six Syrian World Heritage properties: the Ancient City of Damascus, Ancient City of Bosra, Site of Palmyra, Ancient City of Aleppo, Crac des Chevaliers and Qal'at Salah El-Din, and Ancient Villages of Northern Syria. All six have been on the List of World Heritage in Danger since 2013 because of conflict damage, looting, neglect, and instability. Independent reporting in 2025 and 2026 notes continuing restoration efforts at places such as Palmyra and Crac des Chevaliers, but also emphasizes that thorough documentation, security, conservation expertise, and funding remain major issues.

The U.S. State Department currently lists Syria as Level 4, Do Not Travel, citing terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping or hostage taking, armed conflict, unjust detention, health risks, poor infrastructure, and the threat of death or serious injury. It states that the U.S. government suspended embassy operations in Damascus in 2012 and cannot provide routine or emergency consular services to U.S. citizens in Syria. The advisory also warns that U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents may be targeted by armed groups, and that travel to all parts of Syria is unsafe. Visas, local permissions, checkpoints, medical care, insurance, and exit routes cannot be treated as stable tourist logistics.

Visitor Tip: U.S. travelers should not go to Syria under current guidance; follow UNESCO, museum, and archaeological-conservation updates remotely until security and consular conditions change substantially.
