Chad
Chad has some of the Sahara and Sahel's most striking landscapes, including the Ennedi Massif, Lakes of Ounianga, Zakouma National Park, Lake Chad, Saharan rock art, nomadic cultures, and N'Djamena markets and riverfront. In ordinary expedition terms, the main reasons to consider Chad are Ennedi sandstone arches, gueltas, canyons, and rock art; the surreal colors of the Ounianga lakes; and Zakouma's conservation comeback with elephants, lions, buffalo, antelope, and birdlife. Current security conditions, however, require far more caution than a normal safari or desert trip.
UNESCO lists two Chadian World Heritage properties. Lakes of Ounianga, inscribed in 2012, is a series of 18 lakes in the hyper-arid Sahara whose colors, salinity, reeds, dunes, and groundwater-fed hydrology create an exceptional desert landscape. Ennedi Massif: Natural and Cultural Landscape, inscribed in 2016, combines wind- and water-carved sandstone forms with canyons, arches, permanent water, flora and fauna, and thousands of painted and engraved rock-art images. Both are remote, require specialist desert logistics, and should not be approached without current security clearance, experienced operators, satellite communication, fuel planning, and medical evacuation cover.
The U.S. State Department currently lists Chad as Level 3, Reconsider Travel, due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, and armed conflict, and says not to travel to Lake Chad, border areas, or the Tibesti Mountains because of terrorism, landmines, armed conflict, and kidnapping. A visa is required, passports need six months validity beyond arrival and two blank pages, and proof of yellow fever vaccination is required. Desert travel requires cool-season timing, usually roughly November through February, along with sun protection, water, spare fuel, experienced drivers, and tolerance for very basic infrastructure. Zakouma and Ennedi logistics can change with security, rains, air links, and park or permit rules.
Visitor Tip: Do not plan Chad as independent overland travel; if conditions allow, use a specialist operator that can verify permits, security routing, satellite communications, and emergency evacuation before any payment.
