Togo

Togo is a narrow West African country stretching from the Gulf of Guinea to the savanna north, with Lome markets and beaches, Togoville, Lake Togo, Aneho, Kpalime forests and waterfalls, Kara region cultural landscapes, Fazao-Malfakassa National Park, and northern craft traditions. It appeals to travelers interested in culture, markets, architecture, road trips, food, textiles, waterfalls, and a more compact West African itinerary. Lome is the usual arrival point, with the Grand Marche, Monument de l'Independance, National Museum, cathedral, beach areas, and nearby voodoo and colonial-history sites forming a practical first stop.

UNESCO lists one World Heritage property in Togo: Koutammakou, the Land of the Batammariba, a cultural landscape in northern Togo extended into Benin in 2023. It is known for takienta, traditional mud tower-houses that combine domestic, defensive, ritual, agricultural, and cosmological functions, and the landscape includes farmland, forest, sacred rocks, springs, ceremonial spaces, and initiation sites. Visitors should use local guides, ask before photography, avoid treating homes as open-air exhibits, and follow community guidance on sacred places. Kpalime and Mount Agou can pair well with Lome for a shorter trip, while Koutammakou requires a longer northbound route and road-condition checks.

A first visit can be 4 to 6 days for Lome, Lake Togo, Togoville, and Kpalime, or 8 to 12 days with Kara and Koutammakou. The dry season from roughly November to March is easier for roads and walking; the rainy season can affect rural roads and waterfalls. The U.S. State Department has advised increased caution in Togo due to crime, kidnapping, and terrorism risks, with heightened concern near the northern border regions because of extremist activity spilling from the Sahel. U.S. visitors need an eVisa before arrival, passports need at least six months validity and one blank page, and yellow fever proof is required. Road travel at night and isolated beaches should be avoided.

Visitor Tip: Keep Lome and Kpalime flexible, but plan Koutammakou with a trusted local guide and current security advice; northern travel should be checked close to departure, not months ahead.
