Thailand

Thailand is one of Asia's most visited countries because it combines Bangkok, northern mountains, Buddhist temples, beaches, islands, markets, food, festivals, national parks, wellness travel, and strong transport infrastructure. The Tourism Authority of Thailand highlights destinations by region and experiences including Thai food, beaches, adventures, temples, palaces, festivals, waterfalls, Sukhothai, Bangkok neighborhoods, and practical travel planning. First-time visitors commonly pair Bangkok with Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai, then add Ayutthaya, Sukhothai, Kanchanaburi, Khao Yai, Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Lanta, or the Andaman and Gulf islands depending on season.

UNESCO lists Thai heritage including Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns, Historic City of Ayutthaya, Ban Chiang Archaeological Site, Si Thep, Phu Phrabat, Thungyai-Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuaries, Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex, and Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex. Ayutthaya is an easy day trip or overnight from Bangkok, while Sukhothai rewards a slower bicycle-based visit through lotus ponds and temple ruins. Ban Chiang is important for prehistoric settlement and red-painted pottery; Khao Yai is better for waterfalls, wildlife, and forest walks; and southern islands suit diving, kayaking, snorkeling, and beach time.

A first Thailand trip needs 10 to 14 days for Bangkok, northern culture, and one beach region; a focused city-and-beach trip can work in a week. November through February is generally the most comfortable cool-dry season, March to May is hot, and the monsoon varies by coast, with Andaman destinations usually wetter May to October and Gulf islands often better in parts of that period. U.S. travelers should verify current visa-exemption length and entry rules before departure; passports should have at least six months validity. The U.S. State Department has warned travelers to exercise caution in far southern provinces affected by separatist violence, and visitors should respect temple dress codes, monarchy laws, motorbike risks, marine-park rules, and elephant-welfare concerns.

Visitor Tip: Pick one beach coast based on season and avoid overloading the itinerary; Thailand is easier and better when Bangkok, one northern region, and one island or coast get enough time.
