Turkey

Turkey, officially Turkiye, bridges Europe and Asia with Istanbul, Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, Cappadocia, Black Sea highlands, eastern Anatolia, ancient Greek and Roman cities, Ottoman architecture, food, bazaars, beaches, and major pilgrimage and archaeological sites. GoTurkiye, the official travel guide, highlights Istanbul experiences, Hagia Sophia and archaeological museums, Ephesus, Turkish museums, UNESCO heritage, faith travel, beach and outdoor routes, rail tours, caves, cycling, skiing, gastronomy, handcrafts, sustainable destinations, and regional itineraries. First-time visitors usually combine Istanbul with Cappadocia, Ephesus/Selcuk, Pamukkale, the Turquoise Coast, or Ankara and central Anatolia.

UNESCO lists 22 Turkish World Heritage properties as of the 2025 inscription of Sardis and the Lydian Tumuli of Bin Tepe. Major traveler-facing highlights include the Historic Areas of Istanbul, Goreme National Park and Cappadocia rock sites, Hattusha, Mount Nemrut, Hierapolis-Pamukkale, Xanthos-Letoon, Safranbolu, Troy, Selimiye Mosque, Catalhoyuk, Pergamon, Bursa and Cumalikizik, Ephesus, Ani, Aphrodisias, Gobekli Tepe, Arslantepe, Gordion, and the wooden hypostyle mosques of medieval Anatolia. Istanbul alone deserves three to five days for Topkapi, Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Suleymaniye, Grand Bazaar, Spice Bazaar, Bosphorus ferries, and neighborhoods such as Karakoy, Kadikoy, Balat, and Uskudar.

A first trip works well in 10 to 14 days; a week is enough for Istanbul plus one region. Spring and autumn are best for cities, archaeology, and Cappadocia; summer suits coasts but is hot at inland ruins; winter works for Istanbul, skiing, and quieter museums. U.S. travelers should verify current e-visa or visa-exemption rules, passport validity, museum-pass options, and timed entries. The U.S. State Department has advised increased caution in Turkey because of terrorism and arbitrary detentions, and warns against travel near the Syria border and to some southeastern provinces; visitors should avoid demonstrations, respect mosque etiquette, use licensed balloon and tour operators, and watch for pickpocketing in crowded transit and bazaars.

Visitor Tip: Do not rush Istanbul; plan major mosque and museum visits around prayer times and closures, then fly or take an overnight route to Cappadocia or Izmir rather than losing a full day to long bus transfers.
