Uganda

Uganda is one of East Africa's most varied wildlife and adventure destinations, with the Uganda Tourism Board highlighting mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Nile rafting, Rwenzori hiking, safari drives, cultural heritage tours, Kampala nightlife, restaurants, registered guides, and tour operators. The country's headline experience is gorilla trekking in Bwindi or Mgahinga, which requires permits and is physically demanding: expect a guided forest walk on steep, muddy trails where sightings are carefully managed to reduce stress on the gorillas.

UNESCO lists three World Heritage properties in Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Rwenzori Mountains National Park, both inscribed in 1994, and the Tombs of Buganda Kings at Kasubi, inscribed in 2001. Bwindi is important for endangered mountain gorillas and Albertine Rift biodiversity, while the Rwenzori range appeals to serious hikers with high-altitude forests, waterfalls, and glacier scenery. Kasubi, in Kampala, is a major Baganda spiritual and political site; UNESCO notes that it was removed from the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2023 after reconstruction following fire damage.

Travel planning is currently dominated by safety and health conditions. The U.S. State Department advisory issued June 4, 2026 lists Uganda at Level 4, Do Not Travel, citing crime, health, terrorism, and unrest, and notes limited U.S. consular capacity because of an Ebola outbreak, restrictions on border crossings with the DRC, and restrictions on mass gatherings in Kampala and high-risk districts. Visitors who must travel should verify the latest Uganda Ministry of Health, CDC, airline, permit, and park-access updates before committing money to a safari or trekking itinerary.

If conditions improve, most first-time itineraries pair Kampala or Entebbe with Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Murchison Falls, Kibale, Lake Bunyonyi, or Jinja on the Nile; distances are long, roads can be slow, and using a reputable licensed operator is more practical than self-driving. The best wildlife and trekking windows are usually the drier seasons, but highland weather is changeable year-round, so waterproof boots, rain gear, and layered clothing matter. Visitor Tip: Before booking gorilla permits or lodge deposits, check the current State Department advisory, health notices, and Uganda Wildlife Authority or licensed-operator access rules for the exact park and district you plan to visit.
