United States

The United States is a continent-scale destination rather than a single easy itinerary, with major draws ranging from New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, New Orleans, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, and Honolulu to road trips on Route 66, the Pacific Coast Highway, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the national-park circuits of the West. Brand USA's Visit The USA site organizes planning around states, territories, road trips, family travel, arts and culture, Indigenous heritage, outdoor travel, major events, and visa or entry information.

UNESCO lists 26 U.S. World Heritage properties, showing the country's range: cultural sites such as Independence Hall, Mesa Verde, Chaco Culture, Monticello and the University of Virginia, the Statue of Liberty, Taos Pueblo, San Antonio Missions, Cahokia Mounds, Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, and Frank Lloyd Wright architecture; natural sites such as Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Everglades, Great Smoky Mountains, Mammoth Cave, Olympic, Redwood, Carlsbad Caverns, Hawaii Volcanoes, and Waterton-Glacier; and the mixed marine-cultural landscape of Papahanaumokuakea. Many of these are managed by the National Park Service or partner agencies, and timed-entry, vehicle reservations, shuttle systems, or seasonal closures are common at high-demand parks.

International visitors should start with entry rules. USAGov explains that many travelers need a visitor visa, while eligible Visa Waiver Program travelers can use ESTA for tourism or business trips of up to 90 days; Visit The USA also notes that Customs and Border Protection makes the final entry decision at the port of entry. Distances are the main planning trap: New York to the Grand Canyon, Miami to Yellowstone, or Los Angeles to New Orleans are not day-trip scales, and domestic flights or multi-week road trips are often required.

A focused first visit works best as one region in depth: one week for New York and Washington, D.C.; 10 to 14 days for California coast and national parks; one week for Florida beaches and theme parks; or two weeks for Utah-Arizona parks. Spring and autumn bring easier city walking and milder desert weather, summer suits Alaska and mountain parks but requires advance reservations, and winter favors ski regions, Southwest deserts, Hawaii, and Florida. Visitor Tip: Decide whether the trip is city, road-trip, theme-park, or national-park focused before booking flights; the most expensive mistakes usually come from underestimating distance and reservation requirements.
