Holy See (Vatican City State)
Vatican City is the world's smallest sovereign state and one of the densest concentrations of sacred art, architecture, and Catholic history. Most visitors come for St. Peter's Square, St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, the Raphael Rooms, and, when schedules allow, a papal audience or blessing. The practical visit is usually planned from Rome: there are no passport controls for ordinary visitors entering from Italy, but security screening, crowd control, dress codes, and ticketing are central to the experience.
UNESCO inscribed Vatican City as a World Heritage Site in 1984, describing it as one of Christianity's most sacred places and noting the artistic and architectural concentration within the state. UNESCO identifies St. Peter's Basilica as the center of the site, with its double colonnade and circular piazza, and credits the basilica to the combined work of Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo, Bernini, and Maderno. The Vatican Museums' official site lists major collections including the Egyptian and Etruscan museums, Pinacoteca, modern and contemporary art, Sistine Chapel, Raphael's Rooms, Borgia Apartment, and Vatican Gardens.
Current Vatican Museums hours should always be checked before booking; at research time the official site listed Monday to Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with final entry at 6:00 p.m., and free entry on the last Sunday of the month from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with final entry at 12:30 p.m. The site also warns that the only official online ticket portal is tickets.museivaticani.va, because similar domains may charge inflated prices. St. Peter's Basilica itself is separate from the Museums and is free to enter, but queues can be long and the dome climb has stairs and tight passages.
Allow half a day for the Museums and Sistine Chapel, plus one to two hours for St. Peter's Basilica and Square; art-focused travelers can easily spend a full day. Early morning and late afternoon are best for photos of the colonnade, though the Sistine Chapel does not allow photography and silence is expected. Visitor Tip: Book Vatican Museums tickets only through the official portal, cover shoulders and knees for church areas, and visit St. Peter's Basilica before the busiest mid-morning tour groups if you are not attending a papal event.
