Vanuatu

Vanuatu is an 83-island South Pacific country where travel usually centers on Efate and Port Vila, Espiritu Santo, and Tanna. The official tourism office highlights Port Vila's natural harbor, Santo's white beaches, blue holes, World War II history, and diving, and Tanna's Mount Yasur volcano and kastom villages. Chief Roi Mata's Domain, near Efate, is the country's UNESCO World Heritage site and preserves places associated with an influential 17th-century chief whose oral history remains central to local identity.

First-time visitors commonly combine Port Vila markets and lagoon views, a Santo day trip to Champagne Beach or a blue hole, and a guided Tanna visit to Mount Yasur if volcanic activity levels allow. Divers often add the SS President Coolidge wreck near Luganville, while culture-focused travelers look for locally run bungalows, village tours, kava experiences, and seasonal events such as Pentecost land diving, which should only be visited with local permission and a responsible operator. A week is enough for Efate plus one outer island; two weeks makes island hopping more realistic.

The U.S. State Department lists Vanuatu at Level 1 as of its May 22, 2025 advisory, but notes that Port Vila-area infrastructure and roads were damaged in the December 2024 earthquake and repairs continue. Tourist visas are not required for U.S. visitors for stays up to 30 days. Cyclone season usually runs November to April; roads outside Port Vila and Luganville can be narrow or rough, taxis and minibuses are common in the main towns, and the State Department notes that accessibility is limited outside the capital. Travelers should ask landowners before entering non-public beaches or rural areas, because customary land access may require permission or a small fee.

Visitor Tip: Build extra time into inter-island flights and tours, especially in cyclone season or after seismic activity, and check Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards updates before visiting volcano areas.
