Samoa
Samoa is an independent Polynesian country whose visitor routes usually pair Upolu, home to Apia and the international airport, with larger and quieter Savai'i. The official Samoa Tourism Authority emphasizes natural sites, historic places, villages, local cuisine, fales, family travel, adventure activities, and ferry travel to Savai'i. The country has no inscribed UNESCO World Heritage site, but Fagaloa Bay-Uafato Tiavea Conservation Zone on eastern Upolu is on Samoa's Tentative List as a mixed cultural and natural landscape shaped by fa'a Samoa, village governance, rainforest, waterfalls, coral reefs, and rare endemic wildlife.
First-time itineraries often include Apia markets, the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum and Mount Vaea area, To-Sua Ocean Trench with its 30-meter ladder into a lava-tube-fed swimming hole, Lalomanu or other Upolu beaches, Palolo Deep at high tide, and a Savai'i loop for Saleaula Lava Fields, Alofaaga blowholes, waterfalls, and village stays. Samoa suits families, couples, swimmers, photographers, culture-focused travelers, and road-trippers who are comfortable with slow travel. Five to seven days works for Upolu; 10 days is better for adding Savai'i without rushing.
The U.S. State Department lists Samoa at Level 1 as of March 10, 2025, with no tourist visa required for U.S. visitors for stays under 90 days. The Tourism Authority says Samoa is warm and humid year-round, with a dry season from May to October and a wetter season from November to April; most wet-season rain falls December to March. Many attractions are on customary village land and may charge small cash entry fees. Cultural etiquette matters: ask before photographing people, dress modestly in villages and churches, and avoid walking or driving through villages during the evening prayer curfew, usually between 6 and 7 p.m. for 10 to 20 minutes.
Visitor Tip: Rent a car only after checking ferry times and attraction access, carry small tala notes for village-run sites, and plan swimming stops early enough to respect evening Sa curfews.
