Zambia
Zambia is strongly associated with Victoria Falls, walking safaris, big rivers, and lower-density wilderness travel. The official Zambia Tourism site describes the country as the home of the African walking safari, Victoria Falls, the wild Zambezi River, abundant wildlife, and untamed open spaces, and lists national parks such as South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, Kafue, Mosi-oa-Tunya, Liuwa Plain, Kasanka, and North Luangwa. UNESCO lists one World Heritage property in Zambia: Mosi-oa-Tunya / Victoria Falls, shared with Zimbabwe.
Most first-time visitors begin in Livingstone, where the Zambian side of Victoria Falls gives access to Knife-Edge Bridge viewpoints, spray-soaked rainforest paths in high-water months, the Boiling Pot trail when conditions allow, sunset cruises, museum stops, and adventure operators for rafting, flights, and seasonal Devil's Pool trips. Safari travelers then usually fly or drive to South Luangwa for walking safaris and night drives, Lower Zambezi for canoeing and river-based wildlife viewing, or Kafue for a wilder, more spread-out park experience including Busanga Plains in season. Ten to fourteen days is a realistic first trip if combining Livingstone with one or two safari areas.
The U.S. State Department lists Zambia at Level 1 as of July 31, 2023, with U.S. passport holders not requiring a tourist visa. It still advises normal urban precautions: avoid poorly lit areas at night, watch for pickpockets in markets and public transport, and be alert for smash-and-grab theft from vehicles. Dry season, especially June to October, is best for most safaris because animals concentrate near water; Victoria Falls flow is usually most dramatic after the rains, while late dry season can expose more rock on the Zambian side. Many remote lodges operate seasonally, internal flights can be small aircraft, and malaria precautions are important in safari areas.
Visitor Tip: Decide whether your priority is maximum Victoria Falls spray or peak safari viewing; the best months are not identical, and pairing both usually requires accepting a tradeoff.
