Hvar Fortress, usually called Fortica or Spanjola, is the stone citadel above Hvar Town and the island's most useful overview. Its ramparts look down on the red-tiled town, harbour and Pakleni Islands, while inside are defensive structures and a display of amphorae recovered from the sea. It is more than a lookout: Fortica was the upper anchor of Hvar's town walls and harbour defences, reflecting the town's importance on Adriatic sea routes.

The present fort evolved over centuries. Hvar Heritage dates construction from after Venetian rule began in 1278; a Renaissance fortress was completed by 1551, badly damaged when the gunpowder store exploded in 1579, and repaired in the early 17th century. Austrian-period additions in the 18th and 19th centuries produced much of the appearance seen today. Lonely Planet notes that townspeople sheltered here during the Ottoman raid of 1571, a useful reminder that the fine view sits on a working military site rather than a purpose-built scenic terrace.

From the central square, expect a roughly 15- to 20-minute uphill walk through old-town lanes and park paths. The route is paved but steep enough to merit supportive shoes and water, particularly in summer; visitors unable to manage the walk can reach the entrance area by road or taxi. Allow one to 1.5 hours for the fort and photographs, or longer at golden hour. Visit Hvar's June 2026 listing gives Fortica hours of 09:00 to 23:00 and individual admission of EUR12, with a EUR15 combined ticket that also covers several town heritage sites. These are seasonal details, so verify them before climbing.

Visitor Tip: Go in the cooler morning or near sunset, but begin the uphill walk with enough time to enter before the last admission.
