Plitvice Lakes National Park is Croatia's oldest and largest national park, protected since 1949 and listed by UNESCO in 1979. Its signature landscape is a chain of lakes linked by waterfalls and travertine barriers, where water rich in dissolved calcium carbonate continually deposits new limestone. UNESCO emphasizes that this active travertine-building process is central to the park's outstanding value.

For visitors, Plitvice is a walking-and-water experience rather than a single viewpoint. Official sightseeing programs combine boardwalks, forest paths, panoramic vehicles, and electric boats, with routes ranging from short lower-lake circuits to full-day routes covering both Upper and Lower Lakes. The park is open year-round, and the official site lists 7:00am to 8:00pm daily hours at research time, with ticket sales until 5:00pm and parking open 7:00am to 9:00pm.

Allow at least 4 to 6 hours; a full day is better if you want a less rushed route. Summer is busiest and requires advance planning, while spring brings strong water flow, autumn color is excellent, and winter can be beautiful but limited by weather and route closures. Official 2026 ticket prices vary by date, visitor category, and time; adult high-season pricing is higher from June through September, and visitors are strongly advised to buy through the official online shop. Swimming, dogs off leash, drone use, and stepping off marked paths are not permitted.
