About Pula Arena

Pula Arena is the city's defining Roman monument: a first-century amphitheatre whose complete outer ring of walls and four side towers still dominate the edge of the historic centre. It was built as Pula became a Roman regional centre, and its size and survival make it one of the most compelling arenas outside Italy. From the exterior, look closely at the stacked arcades and sea-facing stonework; inside, the oval floor, terraces and underground passages make the engineering easier to understand than at a monument viewed only from the street.

The underground exhibition is particularly useful for context, covering Roman olive-oil production, wine, trade and daily life in Istria rather than presenting the arena as a generic gladiator backdrop. The venue remains active, hosting concerts, film screenings and festivals, which gives it an unusual modern afterlife but can also affect access. The Archaeological Museum of Istria warns that stage construction, sound checks and events may occur during visitor hours or close the site completely.

Allow 45 to 90 minutes. The official visitor page lists adult entry at EUR10, with EUR5 tickets for children, pupils and students; children under five enter free, and tickets can be bought at the entrance or online. Its normal seasonal timetable runs from 08:00 to 22:00 in June through August, but a 29 July 2026 notice shortened that day's opening to 08:00 to 18:30, illustrating why you should check the live notice and event calendar before travelling. The arena is partially accessible, but uneven historic surfaces and stone steps limit some areas. Early morning is cooler, quieter and best for photographs; bring water and sun protection in summer. The Roman Forum, Temple of Augustus, Twin Gates and Pula Cathedral are nearby on foot.

Visitor Tip: Buy online in high season and check the same-day notice before walking over, because concerts can change both hours and the visitor route.
