Zagreb Cathedral, officially the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saints Stephen and Ladislaus, is the dominant landmark of Kaptol and one of Croatia's most important churches. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Zagreb and one of the tallest and most visible structures in the city, with twin spires that have long served as Zagreb symbols.

The cathedral's history is layered: early medieval foundations, Gothic rebuilding, fortifications around Kaptol, severe damage in the 1880 Zagreb earthquake, and a major Neo-Gothic reconstruction led by Hermann Bolle from 1880 to 1906. It was again affected by the 2020 earthquake, and current independent sources list its functional status as under reconstruction. That means the best visitor experience may be exterior viewing from Kaptol rather than a full interior visit.

Highlights include the facade, spires, remaining Kaptol walls nearby, and the sense of scale from the cathedral square. The cathedral is close to Dolac Market, Ban Jelacic Square, and Upper Town, so it fits easily into a central walking route. Allow 20 to 45 minutes if only viewing from outside; interior access, treasury viewing, and service times should be confirmed locally. As an active Catholic cathedral, modest dress and quiet behavior are expected if entry is permitted.

Visitor Tip: Check current reconstruction and entry status before going; even if closed inside, the exterior and Kaptol setting are still worth the short walk.
