Together they show how frankincense and myrrh trade connected southern Arabia with Mediterranean markets from the third century BCE through the Roman era, and how communities made desert agriculture viable.
Choose one or two sites for a focused half- or full-day trip rather than trying to “see the route” at one stop. Avdat is often the most practical introduction because its national-park visitor route includes Byzantine churches, a bathhouse, fortifications, wine presses, water infrastructure, and desert views. Mamshit, Shivta, and Haluza offer different scales and levels of remoteness. A car is the most flexible way to connect the sites; carry water, sun protection, and a charged phone, and do not rely on shade or food service away from visitor areas. Summer heat is serious, so mornings, cooler months, and short exposed walks are sensible.
