About Nidaros Cathedral
Nidaros Cathedral is Norway's national sanctuary and the northernmost medieval cathedral in the world, standing beside the Nidelva in central Trondheim. It grew around the burial place of King Olav II Haraldsson, later St. Olav, whose shrine made medieval Nidaros one of northern Europe's major pilgrimage destinations. The first stone church was begun in 1070, and the building evolved through Romanesque and Gothic phases, repeated fires, rebuilding, and long restoration. It remains an active Church of Norway cathedral as well as a major historic sight.
The west front is the essential exterior view, dense with sculptural figures and pointed Gothic architecture; inside, look for the nave, octagon around the former shrine, stained glass, chapels, and the sense of layered construction rather than a single-period building. The Archbishop's Palace and Norway's Crown Regalia are immediately next door, making this the obvious historic core of a Trondheim visit. Pilgrims finishing St. Olav Ways, architecture travelers, and concert-goers will find more depth here than visitors who only photograph the facade.
The cathedral currently posts visitor hours of 9 AM to 6 PM Monday-Friday, 9 AM to 1 PM Saturday, and 1 PM to 5 PM Sunday. Adult admission is listed at NOK 140, with reduced youth pricing; a summer tower climb costs an additional NOK 70. Services are free, and hours can change for holidays or church events, so check the official calendar before going. Allow 60 to 90 minutes for the cathedral, or two to three hours with the palace and regalia. The compact center is walkable from Bakklandet, the Old Town Bridge, and Solsiden.
Visitor Tip: Buy your ticket at the Visitor Centre, then add the Archbishop's Palace if you want historical context rather than only an architectural visit. Arrive early for the west front before tour groups and to leave room for a riverside walk afterward.
