Trollstigen, the Troll Ladder, is the famous mountain-road section of Norway’s Geiranger-Trollstigen Scenic Route in Rauma. Its defining feature is a tight run of 11 hairpin bends climbing beneath steep peaks and waterfalls, followed by an elevated plateau with designed viewing platforms. This is primarily a driving attraction, though the viewpoints make it worthwhile for photographers, architecture-minded travelers, and road-trippers linking Andalsnes, Valldal, and Geiranger.

Plan at least one to two hours for the road section and plateau, plus considerably more if it is part of a longer scenic-route day. The National Scenic Routes site highlights the largest platform, suspended around 200 metres over the road, as well as the views across the hairpins. There is a visitor centre area and parking at the plateau, but space can be busy during the summer driving season. Trollstigen is normally a warm-season route; Visit Norway says the scenic-road section is generally open from mid-May to October or November, while Fjord Norway’s June 2026 update expected normal 2026 operation from 27 April, weather permitting.

Do not treat any seasonal date as a guarantee. Rockfall, heavy rain, snow, and safety work have caused short-notice restrictions in recent years, so check the Norwegian Public Roads Administration traffic service immediately before driving and have an alternate route. Drive slowly, use pull-offs only where permitted, and expect wind and chill at the plateau even in summer. The marker at 62.4531, 7.6631 is the Trollstigen plateau and scenic-road viewpoint area. Visitor Tip: Check Vegvesen road status on the day of travel, then arrive early or late to park more easily and photograph the bends before the busiest period.
