Evora is well suited to history travelers, architecture enthusiasts, and visitors looking for a slower alternative to Lisbon or the Algarve.
Begin with the Roman Temple and the cathedral quarter, then work downhill toward Giraldo Square and Sao Francisco Church, where the Chapel of Bones is a sober sixteenth-century memento mori made from exhumed remains. The cathedral roof or tower area, when accessible, offers a useful overview of the city and Alentejo plain. Reserve a separate excursion for Almendres Cromlech: it is outside town and requires a car, taxi, or organized visit rather than a casual walk. A full day covers the historic center; two nights allow the cromlech, local food, and vineyards without rushing.
The historic core is compact but paved with cobbles and can be punishingly hot in summer. Plan outdoor walking early, take a midday break, carry water, and use sun protection. Spring and autumn are generally more comfortable. Sites inside churches may close or change access for worship and religious holidays, while the rural cromlech route includes unpaved road sections.
