City travel guide

Frankfurt

Frankfurt is a compact city of contrasts: glass towers, reconstructed old-town lanes, apple-wine taverns, major museums and one of Europe's busiest transport hubs. The first-time route starts at Roemerberg and the New Old Town, continues to Frankfurt Cathedral, crosses or follows the Main, and adds either the Stadel Museum, Main Tower or Palmengarten. Visit Frankfurt describes the city as a meeting of business, culture, modern architecture and historical treasures.

Roemerberg is the best orientation point. The official tourist information office is located directly on the historic square, and many sights including the Imperial Cathedral and New Old Town are within easy walking distance. The City of Frankfurt notes that the eastern row of half-timbered houses was rebuilt in 1986 according to historical plans after wartime destruction. The square is especially atmospheric during the Christmas market, but that also means heavy crowds.

The Main Tower gives the clear skyline view from a rooftop observation platform about 200 metres high, while the Stadel anchors the Museumsufer, the museum embankment along the river. Germany Travel describes the Stadel as one of Germany's preeminent art museums, with European art across nine centuries. Palmengarten is the green counterpoint, with official hours varying by season and show houses that can close separately or during hazardous weather.

Frankfurt works well in one to two days, or even during a long layover if transport timing is realistic. It suits museum travelers, business visitors adding leisure time, architecture fans, food lovers, families and rail-based travelers. Use S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and walking rather than a car in the centre. Trade fairs, Book Fair dates, football matches and December markets can raise hotel prices sharply, so check event calendars before assuming Frankfurt is only a transit stop.

Visitor Tip: Start at Roemerberg, buy or ask about transit and attraction discounts at the tourist office if useful, then choose either Stadel Museum or Main Tower rather than overloading a short visit.
