Its appeal is less about a checklist and more about viewpoints: the castle above the Altstadt, the Old Bridge from the riverbank, and the castle-facing panorama from the north side of the Neckar. The official city tourism site frames Heidelberg around the castle, winding old-town lanes, riverbanks and a lively mix of history and student life.
Heidelberg Castle is the planned anchor. State Palaces and Gardens Baden-Wuerttemberg lists the palace, Altan terrace and large barrel cellar as open year-round with last admission before closing, while interior rooms are visitable only on guided tours. The regular castle ticket includes the courtyard, Great Barrel, German Apothecary Museum and lower funicular railway access; the HeidelbergCARD can bundle public transport with castle admission and discounts.
Allow one full day for the castle, Old Town, Old Bridge and river views, or two days if adding museums, student-history sites and a slower Philosophers' Walk. The castle can be reached by funicular from Kornmarkt or on foot, but the climb is steep. The Philosophers' Walk is also steep, especially via Schlangenweg from the Old Bridge, and is best for visitors with good shoes and enough daylight. Do not drive up the narrow hill route for casual sightseeing.
Heidelberg suits couples, photographers, walkers, university-town fans, castle visitors and train-based travelers. Spring and fall are comfortable; summer brings crowds; winter is quieter except around Christmas markets. Much of the centre is pedestrian-friendly, but old paving, slopes, stairs and funicular queues affect accessibility. Pair Heidelberg with Mannheim, Speyer, Schwetzingen or the Neckar valley when staying longer.
