Kathmandu is Nepal's political and cultural capital and the main gateway to the Kathmandu Valley's seven-part UNESCO World Heritage property. Durbar Square remains a working historic district, and reconstruction after the 2015 earthquake has changed some access and sightlines over time.

At Pashupatinath, non-Hindus are not admitted to the inner main-temple areas, but can visit much of the larger complex. Cremations along the river are religious rites, not a spectacle: dress modestly, keep a respectful distance, do not use flash and follow instructions on photography. The same restraint applies at monasteries and stupas. Nepal Tourism Board notes that entrance fees apply at several heritage sites in the valley, including Kathmandu Durbar Square, Boudhanath and Swayambhunath; confirm current prices and opening arrangements on the day because they can change.

October to November and March to April generally offer the clearest, most comfortable conditions, though haze and traffic can affect city views year-round. Monsoon season brings rain and slippery streets, while winter mornings can be cold and hazy. Central distances look short on a map but traffic is unpredictable, so use a licensed taxi or ride-hailing for cross-city movements and leave extra time. Kathmandu suits history and religion travelers, photographers, food-focused visitors and trekkers who want several days of cultural context before heading into the Himalaya.
