La Fortuna is Costa Rica's principal Arenal Volcano base, combining a small, walkable town with rainforest trails, hot springs, rivers, and one of the country's most recognizable volcanic landscapes. Arenal Volcano National Park is the core sight: the official entrance is about 16 kilometers northwest of La Fortuna and has trails, viewpoints, restrooms, and an information area. The town also works well for guided night walks, hanging bridges, rafting, and thermal pools, so it suits active families, couples, wildlife watchers, and first-time Costa Rica travelers.

Allow two or three full days. Dedicate one to Arenal Volcano National Park and a hot-springs visit, another to La Fortuna Waterfall or hanging bridges, and keep a flexible day for weather. The waterfall is beautiful but physically demanding: the main route includes about 530 steps, making it unsuitable for some visitors even though viewing alternatives exist. A rental car, shuttle, taxi, or organized tour is the normal way to reach dispersed attractions; do not expect to walk from town to every trailhead.

The region is wet and can be cloudy even in drier months, so a clear volcano view is never guaranteed. Bring waterproof footwear, a rain layer, insect repellent, swimwear, and a change of clothes. Book hot springs and popular guided activities ahead in high season, use certified guides, and check park hours and payment requirements directly. Never enter closed trails or approach rivers after heavy rain.

Visitor Tip: Schedule the volcano for the first clear morning and keep a second opportunity open. Treat the waterfall's 530 steps as a real physical commitment, not a quick roadside stop.
