Allow at least two or three days, including a quiet first day for acclimatization. The Potala Palace requires timed, real-name reservation arrangements in peak periods, while Jokhang and the surrounding Barkhor pilgrimage circuit are best approached slowly and respectfully. Sera Monastery adds another major religious site. Walk clockwise with pilgrims where local practice indicates, do not interrupt prostrations or ceremonies, and ask before photographing people, monks, interiors, or religious objects.
At roughly 3,700 meters above sea level, Lhasa can cause acute altitude illness. Rest on arrival, hydrate, avoid intense exertion and alcohol at first, and seek medical advice before travel if you have relevant health conditions. Entry and permit rules for Tibet, reservations, security procedures, road and flight conditions, and site access can change; confirm them only through current official channels or a qualified operator. Stairs, uneven surfaces, and crowd-control measures limit accessibility at major sites. Weather shifts quickly, with strong sun even on cool days.
Visitor Tip: Schedule the Potala only after an acclimatization day and reserve it as soon as travel permissions are settled. At this altitude, rushing the landmark is a poor trade for health and understanding.
