Pisa

Pisa is best known for the Leaning Tower, but the real destination is the entire Piazza dei Miracoli, a UNESCO-listed cluster of the Cathedral, Baptistery, bell tower and Camposanto Monumentale. The city tourism office describes these as four medieval masterpieces in one green precinct. The tower began leaning soon after construction because of unstable ground; its climb is the practical highlight for visitors who can manage the stairs, while the Cathedral, Baptistery and Camposanto make the visit more than a single photograph.

Allow two to four hours for the square, longer if climbing the tower or visiting every monument. Book tower entry in advance when the date is fixed, arrive early for quieter photographs, and check the official operator for current age, bag and timed-entry rules. The square is about a straightforward walk from the historic centre, but Pisa Centrale is farther away, so leave time if arriving by train. The lawn and exterior views are excellent for families and photographers; the tower interior and climb are not an accessibility substitute.

Pisa works as a half-day or overnight stop on a Tuscany rail itinerary. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable walking weather, while summer brings heat, queues and glare. Pair the square with Piazza dei Cavalieri and the Arno-side streets, or use Pisa as a base for Lucca and the coast. Keep the focus on the whole Romanesque complex rather than only the tower.

Visitor Tip: Reserve the tower before travel, visit the Cathedral and Baptistery as well, and take your exterior photos early before day-trip groups arrive.
