City travel guide

Rabat

Rabat is Morocco's administrative capital and a measured alternative to the country's denser tourist cities. Its UNESCO-listed heritage combines the Hassan Tower and Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the Kasbah of the Udayas above the Bou Regreg estuary, the medina, and Chellah's layered Roman and medieval ruins. The city works particularly well for travelers who want history, gardens, ocean light, and a manageable walking pace rather than an overwhelming market experience.

A full day covers the principal sights. Start at Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum, continue through the medina to the Udayas, and leave Chellah for a separate, unhurried visit. The Kasbah offers white-and-blue lanes, garden space, and views toward the river mouth; Chellah needs more time for its archaeological and necropolis setting. Rabat is also an easy rail stop from Casablanca or a logical first or last night on a northern Morocco itinerary.

The central sights are spread enough to require a plan, but most are accessible by walking and taxis rather than a car. Dress respectfully around the Mausoleum and other religious sites, and verify entry requirements for interiors. Coastal weather is milder than inland Morocco but can be windy or cool. Confirm current monument access, rail times, events, security procedures, and mobility conditions before travel. The medina is easier to navigate than Fez but still has uneven lanes and steps.

Visitor Tip: Pair Hassan Tower and the Udayas on the same side of the city, then take a taxi to Chellah. It preserves energy for the ruins instead of spending the day on long cross-town walks.
