Roseau is Dominica's compact, walkable capital and the practical base for the island's rain-forest and volcanic interior. Start with the waterfront and Roseau Market, then walk through the 40-acre Dominica Botanic Gardens below Morne Bruce. The gardens, established in the colonial period, contain tropical plantings and are useful for an easy first look at the island; Morne Bruce adds a broad view over town and the Caribbean. Allow a half-day for Roseau itself, or a full day when combining it with nearby nature sites.
The key excursion is Trafalgar Falls, about five miles east of Roseau. Two falls on tributaries of the Roseau River drop about 125 and 75 feet and are popularly known as Papa and Mama Falls; the official site says the main viewing platform is reached by a roughly 10-minute walk. This is a good option for photographers and families comfortable with a short, uneven outdoor approach, but it is not a substitute for a serious hike. Roseau Museum and the Old Mill Cultural Centre add history and art when weather makes an indoor stop welcome.
Use a licensed taxi, car, or organized tour for Trafalgar and other interior stops, and wear shoes that can handle wet paths. The dry season is generally easier for road travel and viewpoints, while the wetter months make the island greener but can bring heavy rain and short-notice disruptions. Ask before photographing people at the market, and keep valuables unobtrusive in town. Site passes, road conditions, swimming safety, and opening times can change, particularly after storms.
