Saint John’s is Antigua’s small port capital, useful for a half-day of cathedral, museum, duty-free shopping, and food before heading to the island’s beaches or English Harbour. Start at St. John’s Cathedral, then walk through Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay, where shops and restaurants occupy former waterfront commercial areas. The new Government House Museum, completed in 2026, adds a concise account of Antigua and Barbuda’s governance and identity.
Government House Museum is open daily 08:30-17:00 with last entry at 16:00 and publishes an introductory US$15 international rate through October 2026; dress codes exclude beachwear. The city core is compact, but heat and cruise traffic make early morning the best time for the cathedral and market area.
For the island’s essential historic stop, take a separate trip to Nelson’s Dockyard National Park in English Harbour. It is a UNESCO-listed Georgian naval complex with a museum, marina, shops, and restaurants. Use a taxi or rental vehicle for the transfer, and do not try to cover the dockyard and capital on foot.
