The essential sight is Shwedagon Pagoda, the gilded hilltop stupa that remains the country's leading pilgrimage site. The Ministry of Hotels and Tourism also points visitors toward colonial streets, Sule Pagoda, Bogyoke Aung San Market, Kandawgyi Lake, and the riverfront. Allow one full day for a focused city circuit, or two if museums, markets, and unhurried pagoda time matter more than covering ground.
Shwedagon is most atmospheric late in the day, when worshippers arrive and the platform changes with the light; the pagoda's own visitor information lists daily opening from 04:00 to 22:00, but festival and security arrangements can change that. Dress modestly, remove footwear before sacred areas, and do not obstruct people praying or photograph them without consent. Carrying water and using a shaded break are sensible in the hot, humid climate. The steep covered stairways and broad marble platform make this a walking visit, though lift access and entrances should be confirmed directly with the pagoda.
