Fansipan, often called the Roof of Indochina, is Vietnam's highest mountain and the landmark that dominates the Hoang Lien Son range above Sapa. Vietnam Tourism describes the summit experience as a 6 km cable-car journey to 3,143 m in about 15 minutes, followed by the last steps to the top and time in the pagoda complex. Independent mountain references now list the measured height as 3,147.3 m, so visitor-facing sources may show both 3,143 m and the later adjusted elevation.

Sun World Fansipan Legend operates the main tourist access from Sapa. Its official page checked July 11, 2026 listed opening hours of 07:30 AM to 05:00 PM, with a notice that hours may change, and gave the address as Nguyen Chi Thanh Road, Sa Pa Town, Lao Cai Province. The trip can include the Muong Hoa mountain railway from town to the cable-car station; Sun World says this railway opened on March 31, 2018, connects Sapa town with the Fansipan cable-car station, and listed a 2026 round-trip railway ticket at 200,000 VND.

Allow at least half a day, more if you want the railway, summit, spiritual complex, cafes, and weather delays. Sun World's 2026 news describes summit temperatures around 16 to 20 C during late-May heatwaves in the lowlands, and Vietnam Tourism recommends September to October for rice-terrace scenery or April to May for clearer skies. Bring a warm layer, rain protection, and shoes that can handle wet steps; even cable-car visitors still face stairs, altitude, wind, and mist.

Visitor Tip: Go early and check Sun World's operating notice the same morning; clear views can disappear quickly, and cable-car operations are weather-sensitive.
